Northwest Arkansas project guidance

What is the difference between complete demolition and selective demolition?

For owners, architects, facility teams, and general contractors planning renovation or replacement

Short answer

Complete demolition removes an entire structure or defined site improvement. Selective demolition removes only specified portions so renovation, expansion, repair, or tenant construction can proceed while protected construction remains.

Complete demolition

A complete scope may include the structure, slabs, footings, foundations, paving, site features, loading, hauling, disposal, backfill, grading, and restoration.

Selective demolition

Selective work requires careful limits, investigation, protection, sequencing, temporary support or weather protection when specified, dust control, and coordination with structural and MEP trades.

Choose by the final design

The design team should identify what remains and what is removed across architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing documents. Demolition drawings alone may not contain the whole scope.
